How It Works

Swimming pace is measured per 100 meters (or 100 yards in US pools). Unlike running, swimming speed depends heavily on technique — a more efficient stroke can be faster with less effort. Pool length matters: 25m pools require more turns, which can be faster for skilled swimmers (push-off advantage) or slower for beginners (poor turns). Open water swimming is typically 10-20% slower than pool swimming due to navigation, waves, and the absence of walls. For reference, elite freestyle swimmers hold about 55-65 seconds per 100m for 1500m, advanced swimmers 1:15-1:30, and recreational swimmers 1:45-2:30. The projections assume even pacing, but in practice you lose about 2-5 seconds per 100m as distance increases beyond 400m. To improve pace, focus first on body position and stroke efficiency rather than fitness — reducing drag is more effective than increasing power.
